“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in heavenly places in Christ!” (Ephesians 1:3)
I am happy to see you again in this series of works which is my second annual devotional.
For twelve months, we will learn to enjoy the twelve great blessings God has given us in Christ. They are very important, and are part of your inheritance and the means by which you will manifest the reign of God.
Believers who do not enjoy these blessings are unhappy on earth. God wants you and your family to be happy and to manifest His reign on earth. And I assure you, you need divine blessings.
So, two expressions in the text of Ephesians 1:3 strike me. They are:
1) all kinds of blessings
2) in heavenly places in Christ
“All kinds of blessings” means that there are different types of blessings, and “in the heavenly places in Christ” means the location of these blessings.
1) All kinds of blessings
The phrase "all kinds of blessings" means that there are different types of blessings. Therefore, it is not enough to call someone a blessing; one must know what kind of blessing.
You have surely noticed that some people are blessed financially while, for example, on the family level, they face many challenges. Others have the blessing of fertility while professionally, they do not experience progress. In truth, the blessing that makes a couple fertile and the one that gives a person the grace of elevation are totally different blessings. Or, the blessing that grants you good health may be deactivated while the one that makes you find favor with God and men is activated. These are different blessings.
“ These are the blessings that will come upon you and overtake you, if you obey the voice of the Lord your God.” (Deuteronomy 28:2)
As in many other biblical passages, God lists several blessings in Deuteronomy 28:1-14; except that in verse 2, God says: "ALL the blessings..." In other words, the blessings listed in this chapter represent the entirety of the blessings that God grants to His children. Indeed, I realized that no matter how a blessing is worded, it can be categorized into one of the blessings of Deuteronomy 28. Taking the time to count them, I realized that there are twelve blessings, almost as if God had intended each blessing for one of the twelve tribes of Israel or for one of the 12 months of the year.
2) In heavenly places in Christ
We often say that some people are lucky, but in truth, it is more a question of certain types of blessings that operate in their lives. Of the twelve blessings, we would say of the one who carries blessing #2 that he is lucky in love, we would say of the one who manifests blessing #12 that he has the grace of promotions in professional life. We would say of the one who manifests blessing #5 that no adversity can overcome him. And of the one who manifests #1, "How does he always manage to be in the right place at the right time?"
So, whatever the type of blessing, the Holy Scriptures reveal that those who are in Christ possess them all. Wow!! What grace! Yet, it is clear that few Christians manifest them. You can own a car, but not drive it, you can own a house without sleeping in it. Owning something and enjoying it are two different stages. One who owns a car must have the license to drive it; one who owns a house must have the key to enjoy it, etc.
Your inheritance of blessing is certain, but it is in the heavenly places in Christ.
Month by month, blessing by blessing, we will learn to live and manifest this great inheritance of twelve blessings that we have received in Christ.
